The cantref of Ynys y Gwaed is located in the Barony of Ruantallan, in the East Kingdom of the Known World. In the mundane world, it is located on Prince Edward Island, in the eastern part of Canada.
The YYG is a part of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. (SCA), a not-for-profit educational organization which studies the Middle Ages by recreating the pastimes and crafts of the period. International in scope, our activities include tournaments, festivals, classes, feasts, and all manner of arts and sciences you would find in the culture of pre-1600s western Europe.
The SCA is participatory. There are no spectators, and every person plays a part in the creating the atmosphere. We encourage the wearing of period clothing (we'll help you get started). We have members skilled at a number of activities such as calligraphy, fencing, dancing, making 'garb', making armour, etc.
A brief history of the YYG
The earliest attempts at starting a SCA chapter on the island go back to 1988, when Conn (MKA: John Doucette) and Dave Newport tried to garner enough interest to start a group. Unfortunately, nothing really happened at this time. A few years later, 1993-94, Dave McKinnon was approached by this same group of people to teach historical fencing. This group included Joy and Ted MacSwain, Chris Vessey, Sean MacIntosh, John Doucette, and Dave Newport. Jonathon Davis was became involved soon afterwards. Feasts were held in the kitchen/lounge area of the women's residence at UPEI (there was never more than a dozen people in attendance) but much fun was had by all. Eventually, as the group grew, we tried gatherings at people's houses before eventually moving to the Christian College.
From a letter to Lady Eluned D'Ante of Afon from David McKinnon. More to follow....
